Few things, no order.
First, this program does not appear to have ever actually been used by Amazon. That's really fucking good for them, because if they had ever used it, every woman who applied to the company in the USA (and I imagine a number of other countries) during that time period would have a very compelling case for sex-based discrimination, and the fact pattern might be similar enough across all applicants to be certified as a class action, which means much more costly lawsuit for Amazon.
Secondly, under GDPR, it would appear European citizens can opt out of decision making by AI tools like this (Article 22, Automated Individual Decision Making, Including Profiling). However, these programs are likely not widespread now, and the ones that are aren't well known publicly, so it will be difficult someone to make meaningful use of this right currently. That being said, I think it's definitely something to watch going forward, if you're interested in data privacy questions.
Finally, the article indicates that 55% of HR managers in the US say AI will be a big part of their job in the next 5 years, and that a couple of big companies, mainly Hilton and Goldman Sachs, are looking to automate parts of their hiring process. I await someone with more technical prowess than figuring out the these algorithms use, and selling that information to prospective job seekers. We've seen people game other algorithms, such as this very website during the 2016 US Elections.
