The Amazon is not where most of the deforestation has been taking place. Deforestation in the Amazon has fallen dramatically since the 90s, it's still needs to fall more, but it's already much better. Anyway, there are other important forests in the South Hemisphere, such as the Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil and Argentina (which is the most devastated biome of South America, with less than 10% of the original forest cover from the 1500s, originally it was comparable to the Amazon in size and diversity)
