Your perspective is too modern. Wealth doesn't mean education in China. At least a well rounded one. The Cultural Revolution lasted 10 years and literally stopped education for an entire generation. Mao sent all students either to work or to the fields to receive political reinforcement. Then after it ended a minority went back for college for technical education without any humanities but most just kept working to support their families. Many people in their 60s only have an elementary school education. Many of the things they "know" are passed down from another 2 generations that had their educations interrupted by the Japanese Invasion and the Chinese Civil War from 1927-1949. Then the economic boom raised hundreds of millions from subsidence farming to a middle class lifestyle. All the wealth but none of the basic education to use it properly and a huge sense of distrust in government allows superstitious beliefs to continue and flourish. It's also the reason why the Chinese housing markets and stock markets are so messed up.
