A machine can be programmed to do most of that stuff since they already do much of it in real-world driving situations. They stop when lights are red, go when they're green, scan for people and hazards in the road, follow the rules of the road and signage, etc. It may require the site to adapt with signals and communication that can be read/interpreted by a computer, but if there is significant money to be saved, sites will begin implementing it eventually. Even if the sitework is too complicated or expensive to automate, companies can simply train their workers (or hire local specialists) to deal with the shipment at its endpoints. The easily replaced part is the hours or even days a driver spends hauling it between sites.
