Well I wouldnt say thay that there are non-complex life forms, it all depends in the scale you're looking into it. We can only evaluate the complexity of things in our inmediate inferior or superior level, and in this sence cant see the bigger picture (or the really smaller one) and doubt that will be able to before we go extinct. The next thing would be the form we evaluate conscience. We can only compare to our own, but our conscience is limited and formed by the way we interact with our environment and express that consciense through our available biological means, different species (and lifeforms) interact and get their decision-making process input in a different way, hence their internal "conscious" wirings are different to ours, same with their expression of it. Also every living being on earth is changing. On their own pace, but always changing. Some organisms change slower because the variables in their environment dont change so much to push them into other genetic variables.
