I wonder if people appreciate what a self driving car would mean. [Forbes](http://www.forbes.com/sites/chunkamui/2013/01/22/fasten-your-seatbelts-googles-driverless-car-is-worth-trillions/#469923624e3f) had a little piece about this where they estimated this market (which doesnt even exist yet mind you) is going to be in the trillions. You better bet your ass when that kind of money is involved any hurdles we face will be overcome. After all, cash rules everything around us.
Change the way you think about commute and work balance. People that work in offices could be seeing that house that's 1.5 hours away at the lake as doable, because now my commute I can work at the same time. Of course this could also mean employers expecting longer work days. Vegas calling your name, but with the commute and hotel its just too much? Well sleep in your car on the trip there, and use the car as a hotel (car interiors will be drastically different when we dont need to face everyone like a movie theatre)
If you look at the deaths, injuries and costs of automobile accidents it is staggering. [32,675](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_motor_vehicle_deaths_in_U.S._by_year) killed in 2014. We had about 5.6 million accidents in 2012, 1.6 million of which had injuries involved, at a cost of $277 billion a year, or **an extra $1000 for every person in the US** (from when this data was gathered) [source](http://injury.findlaw.com/car-accidents/types-of-car-accident-injuries.html) . I would wager most people know someone who was killed or hurt in a car accident. It can turn your life upside down. It is estimated that [94%](http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/pubs/812115.pdf) of car accidents are the fault of a human. Of course some things arent, if a tree falls physics says some things can't be avoided.
As our population ages mobility is going to be crucial. I am extremely excited to think about all the people who are handicapped or can't drive right now having this type of freedom.
