Having to be smart about using natural resources seems pretty reasonable. Responsibility, whether it be fiscal, social or regarding natural resources isn't a political issue. The faster we move off of our reliance on fossil fuels and current mining practices the better off future society will be. Destructive practices for short term benefits are not something a lot of us are comfortable with.
Speaking for myself, if the U.S. government mandated 25% energy reduction for homes, and 25% reduction in gasoline use by individuals, I would be happy to comply. Living beyond our energy means is not a human right.
